Job Descriptions - Nurturing in the Faith

Christian Education Committee

Description

Oversee learning and teaching experiences for the congregation so that people of all ages grow in their understanding of the gospel and become better equipped for daily living as faithful disciples. Lead the congregation to understand the importance of lifelong growth and learning as Christian disciples.

Qualifications

Spiritual gifts: servanthood, teaching, exhortation (encouragement), leadership, wisdom, knowledge, faith, discernment, administration, helping, and shepherding.

Experience, skills: Have passion for learning and helping others learn and grow in knowledge and in faith; this includes basic understanding of how people learn and basic understanding of teaching skills. Useful skills are ability to listen to and communicate with people of all ages; interest in a wide range of educational experiences; ability to work with teachers, small group leaders, facilitators and others involved in Christian nurture; and skills for researching educational issues and developing programs and events.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain healthy and growing spiritual life and lead others to do the same.
  • Coordinate the planning and implementation of a comprehensive Christian education and formation ministry for your congregation and community. Work collaboratively with other leaders such as children ministry coordinator, youth ministry coordinator, young adult ministry coordinator, adult ministry coordinator, older adult ministry coordinator, family ministry coordinator, class leader, Sunday School Superintendent, small group team coordinator, teachers.
  • Collaborate with the pastor and other leaders so that educational program goals and plans enhance the overall goals of the congregation.
  • Provide for regular training opportunities for teachers and small group leaders by promoting local, district, conference and community training.
  • Encourage people to consider their vocation as Christians and how their  Christian discipleship is expressed in their careers, occupations, and daily living.
  • Lead the congregation in celebrations of worship and fellowship to highlight Christian education and formation in events like rally day; giving Bibles to children; and the launch of special programs and vacation Bible school.
  • Recommend and follow an annual education budget
  • Inform the congregation of needs for Christian nurture.

Sunday School Superintendent

Description

Lead the congregation to nurture and form Christian disciples of all ages.  Coordinate and implement the church school ministries for all ages in the congregation.

Qualifications

 Spiritual gifts: servanthood, teaching, exhortation (encouragement), leadership, wisdom, faith, administration, helping, and shepherding.  

Experience, skills: This leader should shows passion for nurturing the Christian faith of others. This leader must listen well and communicate with people of all ages, have experience in Christian education and development of a program of Christian formation for people of all ages. This leader must be able to delegate tasks, implement and support projects, and follow through to get the job done.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a healthy and growing spiritual life and lead others to do the same
  • Collaborate with the education ministry team or nurture team, age level coordinators and pastor to build and implement the Sunday School for people of all ages to grow and develop as disciples of Jesus Christ.
  • Develop and carry out plans in coordination with the education chair person to promote attendance and participation in the church program for nurture and growth—Sunday School.
  • The leader may build a team of people with gifts and skills for implementation of the Sunday School
  • Be familiar with curriculum resources in order to make recommendations for classes and groups of children, youth, and adults.
  • Recommend teachers and leaders to the church education team.  

Sunday School  Secretary

Responsibilities

  • Take attendance in Sunday School
  • Collect Sunday School Offerings

Special Events Committee

Description

Work with other program committees (i.e. Christian Education and Reaching and Receiving) to plan and carry out special fellowship events in the church.  Examples:  New Year's Eve Party, Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, Confirmation and Graduation breakfasts, August Block Party, Halloween Trick or Trunking, Christmas Caroling.

Qualifications

Experience, skills: Useful skills are ability to listen to and communicate with people of all ages; Most events include a meal of some sort, so the ability to plan and coordinate meals for large groups of people is important.  Publicity know-how will be needed to advertise and invite participants.  Willingness and ability to recruit volunteers to help with the events will be required, along with the ability to direct their work.

  • Coordinate the planning and implementation of special events to encourage discipleship formation while providing fellowship opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with leaders from other committees such as Reaching & Receiving committee, Worship committee, Christian Education committee.
  • Collaborate with the pastor and other leaders so that planned events enhance the overall goals of the congregation.
  • Recommend and follow an annual budget.

Youth Council

Description

Work with youth to develop ministry projects and programs so that youth in your congregation and community will grow in faith as Christian disciples.
Work with other church leaders, youth and their parents to address the needs and opportunities for youth to grow up healthy and safe in your community.
Youth ministry shall be for, with, and by youth.

Qualifications

Spiritual gifts:  servanthood, teaching, exhortation (encouragement), leadership, administration, helping, and shepherding. 

Experience, skills: Show evidence of passion for youth ministry, genuine interest in responding to the hopes and concerns of youth in your community, prior effective ministry leadership, and evidence of active and growing discipleship. Be able to listen well and communicate effectively with people of all ages, be skilled in collaborative planning and implementing ministry, be able to work well with others, delegate responsibility and follow up getting the job done.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a healthy and growing personal spiritual life and lead others to do the same.
  • Pay attention to the hopes, concerns, and needs of youth in your community to determine how your congregation might serve them and their families and how they might serve one another as Christian disciples and good neighbors.
  • Connect youth ministry to the overall goals of your congregation.
  • Advocate for including youth in all aspects of the ministry of the congregation.
  • Raise awareness in your congregation to youth issues, needs and contributions in the community and the world.
  • Work with youth and others to plan and carry out youth ministry in a varied and wide-ranging program that includes worship, study, fellowship, and service opportunities.
  • Learn about curriculum and other resources available for youth in order to help teachers and group leaders select appropriate resources for study and growth.
